SuperYachtResume alternatives that do not cost $47 a layout
A SuperYachtResume template is $47.00 USD, confirmed in the product data on their own template pages on 2026-08-18. That is not outrageous for a design you keep. It is also not the only route, and if you are green and counting what is left after STCW and a flight, it is worth knowing the field. I built SeaPapers, one of the five options below, so read this knowing that. I have put ours in the middle of the list rather than the top, and given every other option its honest strengths.
The five real alternatives
YPI Crew free Word templates
Price: free. No paywall or account found on the page. Format: editable Microsoft Word documents you fill in and save as PDF. Roles: seven. Captain, Officer, Bosun or Deckhand, Engineering, Yacht Chef, Chief Stew, Stew and Specialist. Yacht fields: free text inside a Word file, but the templates are laid out by people who place yacht crew for a living, so the sections are the right ones. Expiry dates: you type them. No structure, no checking. Weakness: no junior or entry level template and no galley specific one, so green crew start from the Bosun or Deckhand file and edit down. Word only, so you need the software and the formatting nerve. Nothing stops you running to three pages.
The thing YPI Crew does that nobody else on this list does: they publish filled in example CVs next to the blank templates, free, so you can see the finished article before you commit an evening to it (ypicrew.com/yacht-crew-cv-templates, seen 2026-08-18). Their written guide also puts the target length at two pages and names sensible fonts (ypicrew.com/yachting-cv-resume, seen 2026-08-18). For a recruitment agency giving away a lead magnet, that is a generous one.
Seazone
Price: free for crew, stated without conditions on their own pricing page. Their paid tiers, Basic at 0 euro a month, Pro at 45 euro and Bundle at 80, are for boat and fleet management, not for crew (seazone.app/pricing/, seen 2026-08-18). Format: an online builder. You fill a profile step by step and it produces the CV, which you download as a PDF or share as a link, and edit from any device. Yacht fields: yes. Certificates with expiry, visas via the profile, photo, video presentation, and written references that Seazone will verify and badge. Expiry dates: captured on the crew side, but the notifications and the folder view are on the manager side, bundled into the paid Pro and Bundle tiers (seazone.app/solutions/crew-documents/, seen 2026-08-18). Weakness: one fixed layout. It is a clean layout, and consistency is a real virtue when a recruiter reads a hundred of them, but you cannot pick a look that suits a chef versus a chief officer.
Seazone is the strongest product on this list that I did not build. They claim over 30,000 crew, the reference verification badge is a genuinely good idea, and the crew side really does appear to be free with no catch I could find.
SeaPapers
Mine. Say the bias out loud and then read the facts.
Price: the editor is free to use. A Pro tier covers clean PDF export and reads the document type and expiry date off a certificate you upload. Format: browser editor with a live preview. Nothing to install, works off a borrowed laptop. Templates: six departments, deck, engineering, interior, galley, officers, and a junior template for people with no yacht time yet, in 23 print safe colours. Yacht fields: structured. Vessels with length, type and role. Certificates with issue and expiry. Visas. References. Expiry dates: their own field, rendered in one consistent place, checked against today in the document folio. Weakness: newest product here, smallest layout catalogue on the page, and clean PDF export sits behind Pro. If layout variety is what you are shopping for, SuperYachtResume has more of it and I am not going to pretend otherwise.
Yotspot
Price: job seeker registration is free. Paid crew memberships exist alongside it for extra features. Format: a profile on a jobs board rather than a CV template. Your details feed applications directly. Yacht fields: profile fields, yacht specific by design. Expiry dates: not confirmed. I could not verify. Weakness: honest caveat here. Yotspot's site returned a bot challenge to both of my crawling tools on 2026-08-18, so I could not confirm their paid membership price or their CV export behaviour against the live page, and I am not going to quote a figure I could not open myself. That may be a crawler blocking artefact rather than anything hidden. Verify the current price on their own membership page before you pay.
Word, Pages, or a generic design tool
Price: whatever you already pay for the software. Format: a blank document and your own judgement. Yacht fields: none. Nothing asks you for vessel length or ENG1 expiry, because none of these tools has ever seen a yacht. Expiry dates: entirely on you. Weakness: the two page rule has no enforcement, and generic design tools tempt you into skill bars, icons and a sidebar rating you at 80% for teamwork. I bin those. Not because I am a snob about design, but because the space they eat is the space where your certificates should be.
If you go this route, open one of YPI Crew's filled in examples first and copy the structure, not the words.
Pick this if
| Pick | If this is you |
|---|---|
| YPI Crew templates | You have Word, you are not green, and you want a free file from people who place crew |
| Seazone | You want a builder plus a job board in one place and one consistent layout suits you |
| SeaPapers | You are green or galley or junior, you want the yacht fields prompted, and you want your certificates and papers held in one place |
| Yotspot | You are hunting jobs first and the profile is the point, with the CV as a by product |
| Word or Pages | You are confident with layout, own the software, and want total control |
| SuperYachtResume | You want the widest layout choice and are happy to pay $47.00 once for a file you keep |
From the bridge: I have hired people whose CV came out of a free Word template and turned down people whose CV cost fifty dollars. The tool is not what got them the job. The dated STCW line, the vessel with its length written next to it, and the two pages that did not waste my morning got them the job.
The honest summary
The gap between a free option and a paid one on this list is not quality of outcome. It is how much of the thinking the tool does for you. A Word file assumes you know what a yacht CV contains. A builder assumes you do not, and asks. If you are green, being asked is worth more than layout choice, and that is the whole reason SeaPapers exists in the shape it does.
I am writing a separate piece comparing a yacht CV builder against a plain Word template in detail, covering what actually changes in the output. It is not published yet. Until it is, the two pages worth reading next are the head to head with SuperYachtResume and the full grading of their 419 templates, which is where the 27 layouts figure in this article comes from.
You can open the SeaPapers editor and type into it before you spend anything anywhere.
QUESTIONS
Is there a genuinely free yacht CV template?
Yes. YPI Crew publishes editable Microsoft Word templates for seven roles with no paywall or account found on the page, and includes filled in example CVs so you can see the finished shape before you start (seen 2026-08-18).
What is the closest thing to SuperYachtResume that is free?
Nothing matches its catalogue size at zero cost. YPI Crew is the closest on format, since both give you a Word file to edit. SeaPapers and Seazone are closer on outcome but different in kind, because both build the CV in a browser instead of handing you a file.
Do I need to pay for a yacht CV at all?
No. You can produce a CV a captain will read for nothing. What money buys is layout choice, someone else writing your words, or a cleaner export. None of those beat correct certificate dates and two disciplined pages.
Can I just use Canva or Word?
You can, and plenty of crew do. Neither is a yachting product, so nothing prompts you for vessel length, certificate expiry or visas, and nothing stops page three. If you use one, work from a yacht specific example so you know what the page should contain.
